Does Integrity Matter to a Sixth Grader?

Integrity--Steadfast adherence to a strict moral or ethical code.

The Mad River Theater performed at Laurelville on Wednesday.   They did a play written by Bob Lucas about Lewis Latimer, an African American Inventor who lived in the late 1800's.  The play recapped Latimer's life, his struggles and his successes.

The performance ended with the song, Honesty, Integrity, and Pride.  These character traits were representative of Latimer's life.  This prods the question, does integrity matter to a sixth grader?  Should it?

Thinking back to the read aloud of Freak the Mighty, and having watched the film, The Mighty, I was thinking about Kevin's view of integrity.  How does it compare to yours?  In a few words, does your integrity guide how you live?

I think it is important for a sixth grader to have integrity because then teachers and students will know who they can trust to do important jobs. It also will help them when they will need help with something. If a sixth grader has integrity they will be known for what they do and how they do it.

Kevin's view of integrity is to let your actions show what kind of person you are, I think Kevin's view of integrity is a good way to put it. Some people may not look like they are kind and honest and then as soon as someone gets use to them they will know they are kind and nice. Then someone who looks like they are a good person could really be someone who is mean and never can get along.

If you steal you get in trouble but also because it is not nice. So I do things I wouldn't want done to me. I don't lie, steal or cheat because I don't want people doing that to me. So I think integrity is doing what is right and that is how I want to live.

My Integrity is that people should not say things like you cheated off my test and you really did not.

My Integrity is like Kevin's because if I was dieing I wouldn't want to tell anyone. If they got attached to me it would hurt them so much not only me them too.

How my Integrity is different is that If my body was to small for my heart I would not bring it up because it would hurt them more.

I think having integrity is important. I think that because integrity can guide how you live. When you decide to make a bad choice could that effect how you live or how you will be living in the future. That is the same way in making a good choice. If you could decide between cheating and getting away with it or make the choice and not cheat. If you decide to cheat then you might try to rely on cheating for the rest of your life and that could affect how you live. Having integrity is important to because I want to go and have a good way of living by having good integrity. I think that are view of integrity is similar because he want Max to get through life being able to do every thing that he couldn't do before by making the right choices.

Integrity:

I think I have integrity to a limit at school I have integrity in most everything I do. At school I think I have integrity to get good grades and to respect the teachers, to have respect for classmates. I have a job at school I'm here to learn, to have an education. I'm not here to goof off and get in trouble all the time thats integrity.

I think everyone has their own integrity at school and at home and other places.

In Freak the Mighty I think Kevin has integrity to lie to Max. I think this because Max would have been sad,and mad, he would loose his mind if Freak had told him the truth. In a way think he was telling him that he was going to haven cause when he went back to the place Freak told him he was going to get the new bionic body the place was white like the clouds so in a way Freak didn't lie.

Integrity should matter to a 6th grader because if a teacher ask you to do something or run something to the office she/he picked you because they could trust you. You want that trust from a teacher because without it they will not trust you to do anything.

Thinking back to the read aloud of Freak the Mighty, and having watched the film, The Mighty, I was thinking about Kevin's view of integrity. How does it compare to yours? In a few words, does your integrity guide how you live?

Kevin's view of integrity compares because he does not care what anybody thinks. Kevin is honest and courageous. Kevin has a big heart for a small kid. It compares to me because I'm honest and compares. It guides your life because if your not honest in life you will not get anywhere.

I think integrity does matter to a sixth grader because you don't want them talking about your bad integrity while you're at recess. For example if Hadley, Madison or Savannah told me to steal something in Mr. McGuire's desk (which they never would) I wouldn't. It also matters because your friends want someone that knows the right things to do (and not to do). And I hope you would want someone with a good integrity as a friend too.

Integrity guides my life because I think integrity means doing the right thing and I want to do the right things in my life.

I think Kevin's integrity is different from mine. For one, I wouldn't lie about getting a brand new body. I also wouldn't keep it a secret from Max that I knew I only had about a year to live. With that big of thing, I would be sure to tell my best friend(s).

Hadley said...

My Integrity is to be honest to my friends. If Hannah tells me something that no one else can know, she knows her secret is safe because I have the integrity to keep it quiet. It is important that I have the integrity to be honest because Hannah would never tell me anything if I was not honest.

My Integrity is like Kevins because if I knew I was dieing, I would not tell my friends because it would be awkward from then on out. I would not tell them because then it would make me sadder about the fact.

My Integrity is different than Kevins because I wouldn't say “I'm going to get a new body”. I probably just wouldn't even bring up the dark, dark fact at all.

Eric said...

My Integrity is that people shouldn't say stuff or do something that your not suppose to do. When I go to other games or tournaments kids at different ages say a bad word or do something stupid. When they do that some other kid gets blamed and from my personal point of view I think it's stupid.

Kevin's view of Integrity is that how you act is what kind of person you are and what you like to do. Some people, kid's, or bullies might think that that's stupid but some young kids might think it's cool and then that leads them to their quest for their life.

Integrity. I think that integrity should apply to anybody who really cares about having a life that is good and right and that shows what you are or what you want to be.

In Freak the Mighty, I think that when Kevin lied about the robotic body he was showing integrity, because if I knew that I was going to die I would not tell my friends. That would just make them mad and they would not have as a good of a time if they knew that you were going to die. But if they didn't know they would have the time of their life and so would you.

I think that my integrity in a couple of words would be Honesty, Discipline, and Respect.

I said yes I think it matters cause I don’t want anyone looking at me like I am a bad person and I do not want them to look bad at my family. I also don’t want to just cause I know wrong from right . Which what I am saying is I know what is bad and what I am allowed to do. But anyway I don’t who it is teacher or a student I just want you to not make rumors and stuff like that. And I think that ” Integrity ” goes along with your personality also. And when it comes to my personality I have a good one and so does my family. And almost everyone that I am friends with have good personality’s. That is like making up a rumor that I stole something when I really didn’t.

Now we focus on the Kevin thing.

I am just like him we have a lot in common we are both short and funny . But one major contrast is that Kevin would probably have straight “ A’s “ in school and I don’t. Now I am not saying I am dumb but I am saying that he is way smarter than me by a long shot.

Kaitlyn C said...

I think that I do have integrity, and I want to have people talk about me in a good way saying like, your very kind and your smart and you do a good job.

Why that matters to me is because I don't want to be turned down by people anymore and I really want to have what every one else has. Like a lot of friends and good clothes. I want to come to school and have a good time and be happy.

I see people so happy and I get jealous. Because I want to be like that so I get mad and I be mean because I wish I had that so much.

I think that Kevin's view of integrity is that he can trust Max and I don't think that he has much trust in people because of his problems so that is good that he can trust Max.

How Kevin's integrity compares to mine is he can't trust people very good and I can't either and people pick on me and people pick on Kevin.

I think that integrity does guide my live because it kinda contrals how you are and act.

Davidm22 said...

Integrity. I think that integrity is like when someone drops money you pick it up and give it to the person that what I think integrity is.

In freak the Mighty,Kevin lied to Max Because Max would tell him not to do that Because Max would not want Kevin not to do it.

Erica H. said...

Integrety is knowing what is right and telling the truth. For example if you see your brother's candy bar on the table and you know it's not right to eat it because it belongs to your brother then you aren't even going to think about eating that candy bar so you just walk away and your brother will trust you.

MakaylaK22 said...

Does integrity matter to a sixth grader? I think that integrity should matter to anyone because if you don't have integrity then you won't be able to be trusted by anyone.

If anyone told me something that nobody was to know I would not tell anyone. If my friend was going to die just like Keven was I would not tell anyone. If there was something that Hadley told me I would not tell anyone unless she told me it was okay to.

Karly said...

Integrity does matter to me because I do not want people to look at me and say don't hang with her because she talks about people,or she steals things. No I want people to say that I am a good person and we should hang out with her.

Kevin's Integrity compares to mine because he doesn't want to hurt anyone feelings because he knew he was going to die so he just had to get them not to worry about and while you live have fun!

My integrity guides how I live because when you get older say you want a job at a bank but, you don't have good integrity, so you know for a fact you probably won't get a job at that bank.

Nathan .N. said...

I think that integrity should be important to everybody. If it was the world would be a better place. I think that I do have good integrity because I think that it is wrong tosteal something that is not yours. I think that Freaks integrity is in the low because he lied about getting a new body.

Hannah Hop. said...

I think that integrity should matter to all people of all ages. Integrity matters to me because how do I expect everyone to have good integrity if I don't myself. Having good integrity matters a lot to me, but when I do the right thing I don't even think about it!

If I was told a secret for my ears only. I wouldn't let it leave my mouth and if I was faced with the candy situation I wouldn't take any. If a friend of mine was planning on dieing and I said I wouldn't tell anyone, I wouldn't but I won't lie and say I wouldn't want to!

Keven's view of integrity is like mine, I think. You should have good integrity!Integrity guides how I live by pointing me in the right direction, making me make good choices and making me to be a better person!

Like I said before, Integrity matters. You may be young and not understand or you just don't care but you can't expect yourself to be a good person without having good integrity first!

Kate R said...

I think that some sixth graders think about integrity. I don't think that all of them do because I usually don't think about it. I don't do things I'm not supposed to do most of the time. I think that integrity should matter to everyone. I think that because it is important to do the right thing even if you don't have to.

My integrity is different than Kevin's because I wouldn't tell people that I was going to get a new body. I wouldn't do that because it wouldn't be true.

My integrity is like Kevin's because I wouldn't tell my family and friends that I was going to die. I wouldn't tell them because they would be sad.

My integrity does and doesn't control my life.

Justin G. said...

I think that yes integrity does matter to a sixth grader. I think integrity should matter for everyone. I think I have integrity like Kevin because if something is going to hurt a friends of mine or anyone then I don't think they need to know unless they want to and sometimes they might have to.

Like say if someone is going to die and then they will need to know but if the person will be really sad then I say keep it to your-self for now then you can tell someone later.

Bad integrity is when there's a $200 baseball bat laying on the ground and no one is around it. So would you pick it up and keep it or would you leave it there or pick it up and maybe someone has their name on it so then you can give it back.

My integrity is in between because if someone ask me to do something I do it unless it's. Another sign of good integrity is respect other people. Like who you live with, your friends and piers, and maybe in some cases your friends parents.

So yes everyone should have integrity and it should be good integrity so you get what you want in life.....

I think integrity matters for a sixth grader. When you have bad integrity, no one would trust you. But if you have good integrity a lot of people would be able to trust you. When you have good integrity you wouldn't do anything that is bad or something that you know would get you in trouble. You know you have bad integrity if someone tells you to go steal something out of someone's locker and you do.

A little while back Mr. McGuire read a book called Freak The Mighty, to the whole class. I think that Kevin's integrity is different compared to mine because he lies to his only friend. Kevin(freak) lied to his new friend Max. Even though Kevin and Max are friends, Kevin lies to Max because he doesn't want Max to know that he doesn't have a long time to live.

Garrett said...

Does integrity matter to sixth grader? Well I disagree because I think it matters to everyone because integrity gives you respect to the people you know,(trust). If I didn't have integrity then not everyone would trust me.

If I was in Kevin position I would not tell Max because he might leave and not want anything to do with me so we are sorta alike.

I think my integrity does guide my live because if I didn't then I would be in jail or some kind of thing like that and I would be hated by everyone.

destiny said...

Yes it does matter to a sixth grader. It matters to me because I do not want me or either of my families made fun of.
An example of integrity is when you see a bunch of candy on the table and you do not even think about taking a piece.

Now lets take a visit to Freak the mighty.

I am kinda like Freak because I was put in some hard problems where it is hard to tell the truth but I do and so does he.

Branden M said...

I think integrity does matter to a sixth grader because they need to know to make good choices and have good morals.

Kevin's view and my view of integrity is kind of the same because if I would been put in a similar situation like Kevin then I probably tell a lie like he did. Even though I hate to lie, I think some lies are good for another persons sake.

In Freak the Mighty, Kevin told Max that he was going to get a new bionic body, but, he was actually going to die. Kevin felt that if he told Max the truth than he would probably freak out.

My integrity does guide how I live because I make good decisions and I do what I think is good.

Kelsey said...

This prods the question, does integrity matter to a sixth grader? Should it?

I think integrity to a sixth grader should matter because nobody wants a friend with bad integrity. I know this because I would not want a friend with bad integrity because then they would tell all my secrets and talk about me behind my back and that kind if stuff.

If I was Kevin I would not tell Max that I was not going to live for much longer because if I did tell him then I would be afraid he would not want to be my friend because he did not want to have great times and do fun things with me, and then your best friend just dies just like that. But if I knew I was going to die I would want to have the most fun I have ever had in my life before I die.

How does it compare to yours? In a few words, does your integrity guide how you live?

I think my integrity does guide how I live because good integrity gives you good sportsmanship, great friendships, good grades and a GREAT life.

Codyk said...

I think it is important for a sixth grader to have integrity so that the students and teachers can tell who have good integrity and the bad integrity.

I think Kevin's integrity is the good kind except the lie about the new robot body to Max but except that it is good integrity.

I think that mine and Kevin's integrity are kinda the same and kinda not because I didn't lie about the whole new body and I don't lie a lot anymore

Kaylee M. said...

The question is does integrity matter to a sixth grader? Should it?

I think integrity does matter because if someone told you to lie and steal would you do it? For example, you go to a friends house with two other friends and one says hey stick that in your pocket until we leave, then you do it. That means you don't have any integrity. If you say no and be honest and tell the friend who lives in that house.

A while back Mr. McGuire read my class and I the book "Freak The Mighty". The other question was, How does it compare to yours? Kevin's integrity is kinda like mine like not try to lie to hurt a friends feelings.

Justin P. said...

I think integrity does matter because everyone would be stealing and talking behind people's backs.

I think my integrity leads me. If it did not, I would probably be in a lot of trouble right now. I would not be successful without my integrity.

My integrity lead me in the past. It leads me in the present, and probably will in the future.

Beth E. said...

Yes I think integrity does matter to a sixth grader. And yes I think it should. Kevin, from Freak The Mighty's, view of integrity is to never lie and to always do the right thing. Like if someone were to tell me to steal something I wouldn't do it. That means I have integrity. If I were to take it that would mean I would have no integrity.

When I compare Kevin's view on integrity to mine I see they are the same. I believe you shouldn't lie and you always need to do the right thing. And yes integrity does guide my life.

Kennedy said...

Kevin's integrity is like mine but not a lot. His is the same as mine because he is very honest. But he did lie about the new body. Everybody has lied before even me. It just comes to a situation like Kevin came to ware that is what you should do. I am not saying that lying is O.K..

I do think that my integrity does guide my life. For example if somebody came up to me and said can I have your answers that you got for math. I know that the right thing to do is to say no. Then again some people make the wrong choices and they have a really low integrity. So my integrity does control my life because any thing you do I know what the right thing is but I can make a bad choice.

Jimmy C. said...

I that integrity is important because for example:if your taking a test and if you have a bad integrity then you would look over the person that is sitting beside you to get an answer. If you have a good integrity then you wouldn't look over at the person that is sitting beside you.I think that your integerity
is important.

Kasi R. said...

I think integrity matters to a sixth grader. If I don't have integrity when I am a kid I am going to grow up thinking it is okay to lie and steel. But it is not okay. If you think steeling is fine then you need to stop and think about what you do and say. If I have integrity when I am a kid I will grow up being a person someone can trust.

If you compare Kevin's integrity to mine I think they would be similar and different. They would be different because I would not lie about getting a new body. Kevin and me are similar because I know lying is not good and I believe Kevin did not lie to hurt Max. I think Kevin knew lying is wrong.

Yes, integrity guides how I live my life. If I have good integrity I will live a great life.

jacoba22 said...

I think that integrity does matter to a 6th grader and it should matter. I think this because integrity is important in everybody's life. For example if you could not find out the answer on a test would you cheat? If you would then you do not have any integrity. If you do not cheat and you figure it out yourself then you do have integrity.

Another question was how does Kevin's integrity compare to yours. Kevin is a character in the book "Freak The Mighty". Our class just got done reading this book in read aloud. I think that Kevin's is a lot like mine like don't cheat and always try your best.

Nash C. said...

I think integrity does matter to a sixth grader because if someone told me to steal something I wouldn't even if I really wanted it. I also think it should because if I do steal it I could get in serious trouble.

I think integrity guides how you live because if I have low integrity then I'll probably get in trouble a lot and that could effect how I grow up and my job(because who's going to hire a thief or a liar?).

I think Kevin's integrity and my integrity are the same because I am honest, try not to hurt anyone's feelings and try to help people whenever I can.

Jacob P. said...

I think that Kevin's integrity, and my integrity are not much alike. Although it would be the right thing to do, I wouldn't get my friend to crawl in a man hole just to get some lady's purse.

I think that integrity doesn't matter to many 6th grade students, although it should. I think that my integrity guides my life by not letting me steal, say nasty things about other people and such without thinking first and not doing it.

Alysha p. said...

This prods the question, does integrity matter to a sixth grader? Should it?

I thank it should because there are bad and good things we should do. I rather do the good and honest things. So when I grow up people will respect me as a proper lady that is nice and honest about every thing.

The way mine and Kevin's and mine relate is. We really don't have a lot in common.

1. We are respectful

Cierra D said...

I think that Integrity is important to a sixth grader because integrity to me is what can show you who is a good person. I can see integrity in someone very many times a day. Like when I am in P.E. and I are playing volley ball or I am playing any sport if my gym teacher leaves to go to the bathroom or even to talk to the principal. If the gym teacher drops a little bit of money out of his pocket or leaves the school keys on a table then if I have good integrity I would not keep the money I would give it back. If he left the keys I would not keep them either.

I think that Kevin's integrity is like mine. If I knew I was going to die I think that I would tell my friend something to keep him from being upset. I would say something to keep them from being upset because I do not like being the reason that someone is upset. I would rather be the person keeping their day beautiful or telling them to "dance in the rain."

In a few words my integrity is very good I know that if it came down to a choice that would decide who if I have good integrity or bad integrity that my integrity is good enough that I can trust myself to make the right decision.

Destiny P said...

I think integrity matters to 6th grade because 6th grade is at the age where we gain more trust. If you don't keep your integrity you can't be trusted with people. People might think you will steal when you go over to there house and 6th grade wants to always be able to go to a friends house.
Kevin's integrity is compared to mine because he sometimes has to lie so he won't hurt any one and he always wants to be trusted with his mom.
Yes I guide my integrity because one time I found a cell phone in Wal-Mart and I took it to the front desk and they found the owner that lost the cell.

Darren said...

I think that integrity matters because I do not want people talking behind my back and saying bad things. I want people to say good thing and I do not steal because I am not a bad person and I do not lie. Lying is a very bad thing you might end up in jail.

And I have a good integrity because I do not do bad stuff like stealing or lying. And I want a friend that I can trust and not lie to me and does not steal.

One time I invited a friend over and he steals from me because he took 10 dollar out of my wallet and I do not trust him.
