The Author's Feelings

Have you ever thought about what the writer was feeling? In most instances, great writing is the result of situations or problems that spark strong feelings. The writer is faced with an emotional situation and uses writing as an outlet.

Sometimes feelings of joy need to be shared. Other times relief in dealing with sadness or grief comes from sharing through writing. In this poem, Mother to Son, by Langston Hughes, he describes facing the challenges in life.

Well, son, I'll tell you:

Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor --
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners,
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light.
So boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
Don't you fall now --
For I'se still goin', honey,
I'se still climbin',

And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.

What was he feeling as he wrote this poem? How does that relate to your feelings as a reader? Do think there is usually a connection between the author's feelings and the reader's feelings?

I think that the writer is trying to say is that life is not all that easy. I think that he is talking to his son and telling him not to go down that path that he did. He is talking about him having a hard life when he was a kid and when he was a adult. I feel that the writer is right, life is not all that easy like some people may say. I think that the reader has nothing in common with this poem because I have not lived that life.

The author was thinking about something in life that brought him down. Something terrible or worse happened and he wanted to tell people about it using poetry. It tells about what happened using how life isn't all that good. But he then tells that after all that, you shouldn't give up. To keep on going, whatever life throws at you. So in conclusion, something happened to him and he didn't give up on it. He wrote a poem to tell people about you should never give up when life does something wrong. He Said "Don't you fall now --For I'se still goin', honey,
I'se still climbin',And life for me ain't been no crystal stair". That's what he means.

What I think she's trying to say is that her life hasn't been smooth, that it's been bad at times, but she still keeps on going. The reaching landings part means she's reached certain points where life treated her fairly, and the turning corners mean's her life has changed at certain points. The going in the dark part means that for a while her life was really bad. The don't turn back part means don't stop living life. The I'se still climbing part means she's still living her life. That is what I think Langston Hughes poem means.

I think at the time of writing this, the author was feeling grief. And I think he meant that no matter how hard life is, you have to keep going, have to keep climbing, have to journey on. He means that no matter what happens to you, you have to keep going. Also I think there is always a connection between an author's feelings and a reader's feelings. The reason why is because when I read a happy poem, I start to feel happy, and at that time when the author wrought it, he or she probably felt happy as well. So what I think this poem means is that no matter how hard life is, you have to keep going, and I also think there is always a connection between an author's feelings and a reader's feelings.

I think the author is feel like he doesn't have a goel until his mom
in inspired by his mom and then feels like he can accomplish anything. It sort of relates to me because sometimes I don't have a goal, but the teachers give me a goal. Like in the poem, the son doesn't really have a goal, but then the mother helps him to give him a goal. The connection between the author and the reader is maybe they both had a rough life and
maybe somebody inspired them to have a goal.

I think the author is trying to describe how hard they have worked to be where they are now. I also think the author is trying to make a point like Don't ever give up on yourself.

I think the author was feeling kind of down on themselves but I think that they were trying to be successful at the same time they were writing this poem.

I think there would be a connection between the author and writer because when somebody reads this poem I think it makes people want to be successful.

This poem relates to me because sometimes its hard for me at home because everybody is fighting and being mean to everyone. Sometimes I feel like giving up but, then I keep going because I want to make my family happy.

I think the author is trying to say is that they had a really rough life. They are trying to say don't give up and never stop believing.

They are saying that even though they had a rough life they never gave up hope just like me. I had a really rough life but I never gave up. I fought through every thing.

I think that's what the author is trying to say. There saying no matter what the battle is fight through it and never give up.

I have been through a lot. I just kept pushing through. It was hard. But I never gave up. I wanted to but I couldn't.

I think that's what this poem is all about. It's about whatever your going through never give up.

On the reading workshop we are to describe how the author of Mother to Son, by Langston Hughes fills. We are also to write our fillings as a reader. The last question we had to answer was if there was a reader/writer connection.

I think the author of this poem was feeling emotional for the kid he wrote about. Or maybe he just was thinking of someone he knew. There are ranges of things it could possible be. My fillings as a reader is that the main character is going through rough times. Filling this it reminded me how life can be tough sometimes.

This relates to me because I have been through tough times in my life. For example at the beginning of the year my grades are not as good as they are now. I went from D's and F's to A's and C's. This shows a relation because the person in the poem is stating tough times.

I myself think there is a connection between reader and writer. Why? The writer states that "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair." This shows a connection for me because he is showing that life is not so easy, and there will be hard times.

Like I said there are many ranges of possibilities for this poem but one this is for sure, the writer is filling emotion on how life for him his.

The poem is "Mother to Son," by Langston Hughes

I think the poem is trying to say that life can be tough but if you don't give up and keep fighting it could get better.

I think the poem is trying to say that life can be tough. I think it the poem is trying to say that because the poem says "Life for be ain't been no crystal stair."

I also think the poem is trying to say that if you don't give up when life is tough, it could get better. I think that because the poem says "I'se been climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's."

This poem relates to me because when I crashed my bike and I had trouble with my leg, I still stayed strong and my leg got better and I can run now!

I think the poem is trying to say when life gets tough, don't give up and stay strong. what do you think this poem says?

Kylieann S. said...

I think the author is trying to say never give up when times get rough. I think there is a connection between the reader and the
author because sometimes you have to think about what they are trying to say.

Cole R. said...

I think the writer is trying to describe how hard life has been. Also that not everything is sunshine and rainbows. And that life could have challenges. Also that you have to push through you problems.

Another thing that the writer could be trying to say is that life may be challenging. But that you can't give up and that you have to keep going. So you cannot give up on yourself to early. You have to tough out what challenges lay ahead of you and overcome them.

As she states in the post '' Life ain't been no crystal stair.'' that probably means life has been harder for her in the past but she toughed it out and moved on with her life. Also meaning she has had the strength to overcome those challenges and not give up on herself.

She also states that life has had tacks in it. I think that the tacks might represent problems and the challenges and that you have to overcome. That could also mean there could be things that try to block her from moving forward.

I can relate this problem to myself because I sometimes have problems. I have to make sure I fix that problem so I can be happy with myself. and make sure I carry on with my life and be happy.

I will talk about the poem called Mother To Son by Langston Hughes.

I think Langston Hughes is try to tell us about his mom and how her life has not been easy. I think this makes him kind of sad, knowing that his mom has had a rough life.

There is also talk about success in the poem. When the author says, "So boy, don't you turn back", the author is saying in other words, "don't give up". The next few lines have the same meanings too. Like when he said "Don't you fall now". He means don't stop now and don't fail.

I can relate to him in some ways because every since I can remember I have been told, don't give up, don't stop now, keep doing what you like, do what makes you happy. This is just one thing me and him can relate to. But a difference between him and me is, (just by reading the poem) you can tell that his mom was there to give him advice. But my mom was never there to give me advice. These are just one difference and one similarity between me and the author.

This poem is a great inspirational poem. The Author is telling you that life is not at all that great but if you get past the hard bumpy challenging road you will eventually get up to were the road starts to get patches. Then the next thing you know the road will be so smooth you forget to look in the mirror and once you look in the mirror your face and hair won't even bother you. Just because life has just gone by.

I also think it is telling you that you do not have to struggle in life because once you are done dealing with the stuff you will miss it because it is past. This poem is a very good inspiring poem with anyone with a problem.

From reading this poem, I could tell that the author was going through a hard time. The author basically state's that life will get easier in the end. But maybe in the process you have to fight to get there. I think of it as, ''You have to fall before you fly.''

Yes, I do think there is a connection somewhere between the author, and the reader's feelings. I think this because, we have all been in a tough spot. But most of us do not give up, until we are successful.

To the end of the poem I could see a change. At the end of the poem I think the author is saying to never give up..

another is And sometimes going in the dark
Where there ain't been no light it means there will be dark but you will have to carry on.
Another is Don't you fall now for I'se still going, honey, I still see you climbing it means don't give up now when you have gone so far

When I read this poem many things came to my mind. One thing I was thinking about was the theme. I think that what Langston Hughes was trying to say was to never give up because even though life isn't going to be fair you still have to keep trying. Another thing that came to my mind is connection of my feelings with the author's. I thought and said to myself that I can't give up I have to keep trying no matter how hard life gets. Also I think this poem says that life is gonna beat you up and going to break you down but you have to get up and keep moving. This poem says a lot and is a great motivation poem because first is tells you that life isn't going to be easy, secondly it says even though life isn't going to be easy you have to keep moving, and lastly the poem also shows a lot of feelings and emotions that connect a lot with the reader.

I think this poem is a really powerful message. It talks about never giving up on life because it may be a bumpy road but you have to keep going. This poem is really cool because he relates life being hard as a beat up staircase. It's telling you that life for some people is hard but it is telling you to keep going. To me, that is a really powerful and meaningful message.

When I was little I was bullied in school. It was hard for me to concentrate in school and I just hated learning. I didn't want to go to school. I almost gave up. I started thinking about switching schools. Thats when we packed up our things and moved to a new house and a new school. At my new school I made a few friends and I was actually happy at school and I was enjoying the learning. I was finally happy. I never gave up.

I think he was feeling sad because the way he wrote it sounds like he was sad and felt bad. It relates to my feelings because I have been told some thing like that before. Some one telling you life is not perfect and it does not go the way you wanted it to go.I do think there can be a related feeling between the author and the reader because I have a related feeling with this author and are feelings are pretty much the same to me.

I think that he saying the mother is telling him that she didn't grow up in nice house with carpet floors and stable walls. I think he's saying she that she fought through it and became a good parent.

I think she had a rough time because it says in the poem "It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor --
Bare."

I also think he is using the crystal stair case as an example of a rich person. She had to battle for what she needed in life and keep going. She doesn't want her son to be that way and she wants him to be the best that he can be.

I think she wants him to battle and push through all the tough times in life. Life can be hard because some people don't care what you think or what you do, some people will do anything for something they want.

When I read this poem It's like telling someone to never give up. Why do I say that? Well the reason why is because it's saying that I've been climbing and reaching. Then it says to never sit down or turn back. so that is a reason of never giving up.

It's also say that life is hard sometimes. But you got to just keep going and to never give up.

So that is what I feel when I read this poem. But to me when I read this it is kind of touching. Also it's a really good example of what to do and what not to do.

I think the author was trying to say something to his mom. I think the son was trying to communicate with his mom through this poem. I also think he's trying to say a certain thing to his mom about life. The son is probably talking about hard stuff in life, like stuff he has to do to survive. (Working very hard to complete the task)

The mom is most likely going through a rough time in life. The son could be taking care of his mom. He probably grew up with a hard life and the only support he had was his mother. The son most likely had no other siblings.

I think the son worked very hard in his life. And I think this is the time where he has to follow in his mothers footsteps to succeed in life. I think the mother and son are very close. I also think they are the only people keeping the other person happy and healthy.

I think this poem is telling him not to give up. That life is a set of stairs we all should climb them up. It might be hard but keep climbing. We all have tacks and splinters. Maybe The tacks and splinters are longer than other people.

This poem relates to me by grades
in school all year I really haven't put all effort. I put some effort but not 110 percent. I had one grade that was always a C'. Then it went to a D' so this last nine weeks I have a goal to get all A's on my report card. What I'm saying is that Through this year I was having a time in me climbing the stairs where I wasn't trying hard.

So the poem is telling you that when you are climbing the stairs that you should give 110 percent.

I think that the author is trying to say that life may be hard but you have to keep going and keep trying. No matter what happens in life never give up. I think the mom in the poem is trying to say that she had a hard time in life but she doesn't want the boy too. You have to be prepared for anything that comes your way in life and to be strong.Like in my life times were hard but we kept going until it was over.So if you never give up then you may get those crystal stairs. If you keep pushing through the hard times in life it will get better at the end.

So maybe someday you could get those crystal stairs if you never give up.

When I read it I think that the author is trying to say that don't be scared or shy don't be afraid of what you are scared of be brave and stand up and show that you have confidence in your self.

And that shows that you should have confidence and never give up on yourself ever and stand up and face your fears. Also that you should never give up, work hard and keep on going.

Be strong and show what you got in yourself. And also that life is sometimes hard but you have to face it that's how life is.

If life is hard just calm down and relax and just face it and just go with it just hang on. So that is what I think what the author is trying to say.

I think in this poem that Langston was feeling sad and that he just wants to give up. But he is also telling people that they can't give up in life. I think that because he shows that life can be hard but you can get through it.

I feel like a could be in his spot. Like if he means life can be hard sometimes in life than yha anyone can feel what he's feeling. He shows it in the way he wrote this poem.

I also think that there's a connection between the writer and the reader because if he can make us feel like we are in his spot. We can feel what he is feeling. So what I'm saying is that we can connect and we could feel the same as him.

I can really relate to this poem. I think that Langston Hughes is an amazing writer and I can really relate to some of his poems. There is a message in this poem and that message is never give up and nothing is perfect. I can picture this poem in my head and that is what makes me think about this message. I think that he had a lot of emotions while writing this poem, and I think that one major emotion was sad because this is kind of a sad feeling poem.

I think the poem tells people that life is not all that easy and there is no easy way to avoid all the obstacles that get thrown at you. When the poem says life is no crystal stair it means that If there are no obstacles in life that is like cheating in life. so you need to be prepared to face those obstacles.

When the mother is talking to the son the mom is talking about all of the obstacles she has been through in life and that she wants her son to prepare for the obstacles in life like the ones she faced. I think that this poem should teach every kid a lesson because almost every kid probably wants to be a millionaire and this poem says that it might not happen.

I really liked this poem because I can relate to it. My life has had some cracks in it and dark places but I got through them. My childhood was rough and hard for me. I can relate to the poem because not everything in my life has been perfect. That's one of the reasons I liked this poem.

Another reason is that I liked how it said that my life has been no crystal stair. I think what the writer is trying to say is that life hasn't been perfect and not crystal clean and to never give up on life and to make the most out of it. I think the writer is trying to say that to get good things you have to work hard and never give up no matter what. I also think that the writer is trying to say that life isn't going to be perfect and there are going to be some dark times we have to go through. Sooner or later well make it through that dark time.

This poem kinda sounds like the narrator has had a very bad life with a lot of situations he had to overcome, this poem made me think of all the family members and pets i`ve lost overtime and what happened to them. There is a big relationship with the poem and me.

I think what Langston Hughes is trying to say is don`t give up if you get stuck overcome it and go on with your life because after a big situation happens theirs no way that you go back and fix that mistake just go on with your life and don`t give up.

I think Langston Hughes emotion when he wrote this poem is he was very sad about everything that happened and he wants everybody to know just keep your eye on what`s going on and don`t ever give up on life because it sometimes it will get better and sometimes it can get worse.

I think that Langston Hughes' mother is trying to say that life isn't easy. You will go through some tough times and it will be tough to get back your feet. However just keep dreaming.

When Langston was hearing his mother say this I think that he was learning that you need to keep "climbing". Also maybe he was thinking that his mothers childhood wasn't the best.

I think there is a connection with the authors feelings. Maybe he was having a tough time and needed to be reminded to get back up. In other words maybe he was think about all the good times as a child and decided to write the poem.

I think that she is trying to say that you should never go down the same path that I took because it is not easy. I also think that she is trying to say that you should never give up and just keep walking and don't sit down on the stairs because at the end of pain is success. I also think that she is trying to say that life was not that easy when she was a kid and don't take that same path that she did.

Gavin said...

I think what Langston Hughes is saying is life can be hard but you have to keep going no matter the circumstances. I also think he is saying never give up and sit down and be a whiner, kind of like if you were in a life death situation don't just sit and die. You would fight to keep your life. Also, I think the author of this poem had a mom that was very encouraging about being successful with life. Langston Hughes really put his feelings into this poem and that is what made it so good.

David Evans said...

What I think the writer is trying to get at is to never give up. Langston Hughes is saying his life wasn't easy. So he is not going to help to make other peoples life easier. He had to work trough his pain. So he is basically saying that you need to work through your pain. Like when my shoulder was hurt I had to work to get my school work done and work at home.

When he was writing this poem he was probable thinking about his rough times in life. When I read this I think of the rough times I've had. I think he was trying to get you to slow down and think of the times that you gave up but shouldn't have. I think there was a connection between the writer and the reader.

In the poem, I think that Langston Hughes is feeling kind of motivated to climb those stairs of life. That's what it made me want to do. It made me not want to give up, and do something extraordinary that will really matter in my life. I think that the Mother is trying to urge him to move around those obstacles in life, and to never stop trying. I think that because in the paragraph the Mother says, "So boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
Don't you fall now --
For I'se still goin', honey,
I'se still climbin'," I felt this in me, as well. I think there is normally a connection between the author and the reader, I felt a connection in me that reminded me of when I was being bullied one day in first grade. When my mom told me that people will be people and that I will have to deal with people like this for a long time, and then she simply just told the bully off and I didn't have to deal with him again. She showed me that one simple thing wouldn't ruin my life forever, and that I have to get through those bad things, to get to the good things. The main point I think is to get back up after falling,(Or in other words) don't let life get you down.

I think that Langston Hughes is trying to tell the reader and me that life is going to be hard and if you're not making your life some what tough then you will have rough life like the boys mother.

I also think that Langston is using the crystal staircase as an example of a rich person, and how the mother had to battle through toughness and hard times. Also for that boy to be ready for tough obstacles throughout his life.

" It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor --
Bare.

In those examples it's hard times that the mother had to fight through to be better at life. So she pushed and then succeed at becoming a stronger person.

That is what I think on how Langston Hughes is trying to get the to people that need to become stronger.

What I think Langston Hughes was felling as he wrote this poem. It was probably sometime when his mom was trying to encourage him to never give up and keep reaching for his goal.

I can relate to this from when mt leg was brook. I thought that I would never be able to play soccer for the rest of the season. So I gave up. But my mom encouraged me to do the best I could do for my team at the time.

Also I do think sometimes there's a connection between a readers and a author's feelings. But only when the reader has had about the same experience as the author has had.

I think what the writer is trying to say that life is not easy and you have to follow the right path to get something good out of what your doing and you should never give up on yourself and to always try again. and to know that someone else has been down that road and that they had a bad life to and life is not fun foe them either. Also that they never gave up and neither should you. Also they were still going after they were broken. That's what I think the writer is trying to say.

I think he is saying life is going to be hard But never give up. Don't sit there and die keep going.

Also "ain't been no crystal stair" I think the mother is telling her son to be prepared for the obstacles he will face.
So be prepared for the thing you will face because you ain't going to have it easy.
No one will.

So that is what I think. So don't give up.

I think the writer is feeling like there are hard things in life, but there are still some good things to hold on to. I think that when he says "life for me ain't been no crystal stair", I think the writer is trying to say life is not easy. I think hes also trying to say life is like an obstacle course, it can be though until after you have succeed.

I think that as a reader I feel that it relates to me because its about like working hard not to keep going. I work hard everyday in still and out of school. I think its about working hard because the poem says "Cause you finds it's kinder hard. Don't you fall now-- For I'se still goin', honey, I'se still climbin'."

I think my feelings and the author's feelings connect by everything things in the poem because hes talking about working hard, so maybe he works hard. I always work hard. I think he has had some bad times in his life so he thinks its an obstacle course. I always think life is an obstacle course. I think over all me and the other agree on a lot about the poem.

I think that the meaning of this poem is that life can be hard and full of rough moments. You just feel like giving up and not wanting to move forward in life but I think the writer is saying that life is not going to be easy. You will have times in your life when you just feel like giving up but you just have to keep yourself going. You have to keep your head up and move forward in life. Even at the most toughest points in your life you need to not give up. Sometimes it can be hard but you need to try because it's always good to stay strong and to never give up.

There will be some time in your life when your having a bad day, week, month or even longer but you can't just give up. You have to keep climbing no matter how hard it is to keep climbing. There might be some parts of the "stairs" that are falling apart and breaking but that doesn't mean you need to fall apart and break. You are strong enough to keep going.

I think that this poem relates to me in a personal way because I never give up. If I get bullied at school or if maybe I just straight up had a bad day and I am not happy, i'm sad. I will still keep my head up and keep going because no matter what happens in life tomorrow is a new day a fresh start.

I think the author Langston Hughes is trying to express about a time in his life where, his mom was encouraging him to do something that he didn't want to do.So she started telling him about times in her life. She wanted to give up but she didn't and that made her succeed.

I can relate to that because when I wanted to give up on volleyball my mom practiced with me, and made me keep going until I reached success. She made me realize that you never give up because you can always grow stronger. I finished out the season and now she wants me to play again.

A reader's and an author's thoughts sometimes can relate but sometimes they can't.I like when you can relate with what the author is feeling. It makes me understand the piece of writing better.

This poem is very interesting. It's very strong. It's really nice to just think about what it means. What's the message? What is the poet trying to tell me? The writer/poet obviously had a hard-working mother that didn't let him give up. She kept him going by showing him how brave she was, how hard working she was. This poem says that no matter if life is looking tough, go big. DO IT. Go for it. Deal with it. It's a good thing for him to have that pushing and motivating bond with his mother. Thumbs up!

I think that this poem is saying that your not the only one who has or had problems.

He writes, "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair." I thinks that he means that his mom is telling him that she had to work for what she has, and he is too.

"And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light." In this part of the poem I think that the author's mom is telling him that there isn't always going to be someone to guide him thought whatever problems he is going through.

When he says " So boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard." I think that that means don't give up, you will find that in the end it was worth it.

To me this poem shows that Langston Hughes's mother didn't have an easy life. Also that her life was hard and she wasn't rich dnd she still isn't but she has been surviving. The lesson or reason I think Langston wrote this poem is because He wanted people to know life isn't easy and that not everyone gets a chance to do everything like some people. The final reason I think he wrote this poem is because he also wanted to show that there are some curveballs that will be thrown your way in life.

I think the writer is trying to explain how his mother would talk to him. Or how they acted when they talked. I think he was trying to explain how his mother was. I think he was explaining what his mom would say if he gave up. I think it is an inspiration to not give up. I think he is telling us to not quit trying.

I think what Langston Hughes is saying is that life isn't easy. I think that because in his poem it says,"Life for me ain't been no crystal stair." That tells me that his moms life wasn't easy and she doesn't want him to take the same path as her. In the poem he said,"Don't you set down on the steps 'cause you find it's kinder hard." I think that means that you shouldn't quit, you should keep going. I think Langston is talking about problems in life when he brings up examples like, tacks, boards torn up, no carpet, and sometimes being in the dark. I think those examples signify problems in your life. The stairs that were in the poem is your timeline in your life. I think that Langston made this poem to send a message out to people to tell them not to give up in life, keep fighting through it.

I think he was talking about a time that his mom told him about. That he should be happy for the life he has or, telling him not to do something and that was her example for not doing it.

It made me feel like I was out in the country were I live sitting on my step and looking out into the world thinking what could my life had be like if the things that happen. Never happened.

It makes you think you are grateful for the life you have. And it was talking about things about life and stuff. Also makes you think when it said "Boards torn up, sometimes goin' in the dark where there aint' no light". It makes you think no light I know we all have phones and light and other light source stuff.. But they did not even have light that was sad to me.

You should be happy that you have a phone,TV,light, warm food,a bed,and all you need and more. These people did not have any of those things... So be happy Thank you have that you got a little not a lot.

a nice day.....

I think the whole message in this poem is, life is not going to be easy but keep on going. When it says "Don't you fall now" I think that means don't give up on life now, you have to go on to achieve your goals.

I think this poem is trying to explain that life is not going to go the way you want it to go, and it is not going to be easy. Even though life is hard you have to keep climbing.

A part of this poem reminds me of my mom telling me to be happy with what I have. When I read this poem and it is explaining that life isn't easy, it reminds me of what my mom said.

I think that the Author, Langston Hughes was feeling like he would want to give up. Although after you read between the lines a bit you see that the message/moral of the poem that the Langston Hughes added was to never give up. To reach your goal.

This connects to me because most the time I feel as if I wanted to give up, to walk away and never reach the goals I had in mind, but I kept trying and finally reached those goals.

Basicly, this poem is telling you to don't give up or go back because if you do, you'll regret your decision.

I think what the poem is trying to say is, that no matter what the problems are we have to continue. Never give up and whine about anything. I also think he is trying to get to the readers that, his mom is very encouraging and trying to make him successful.

Langston put his feelings about how his mom is and how he is into this. Which makes this poem good. I thin Langston is trying to tell the readers that his mom is very encouraging and he appreciates it.

I love the poem, and I love they way you wrote it. The message was to never give up, and do your best and don't sit Down when it hurts. I thought it was very motivational and that life isn't fare most of the time. That's what I thought he meant in the poem.

The message that the author is trying to get through about his mom's life is she did not have it given to her. She had to work for everything she has and to tell him to keep on working just like she did to get where he wanted to be like reflecting on her life saying she is were she wants to be even know it took blood sweat tears a lot of hard work she got there. What I think when she talks about always work for it goes along with let nothing get in your way of achieving what you want to in life. At the beginning I think she is when she say's "It's had tacks in it, and splinters." She means there are going to be bumps in the road but to never give up no matter what and succeed. In the poem when it says I have been climbing along and reaching landing it means she has milestones in her life and she wants the same for the son. Over all I think the poem in all means there are going to be ups and downs and that you have to overcome them if you want to get anywhere in life.

I think the Langston Hughes was trying to send a message about life. I think he was saying now matter how bad you have it someone out there has it ten times worse. Langston was trying to say to not stop, to just keep going no matter how bad it gets, or how hard it gets. This poem made me think a lot as well. Poetry just amazes me, how such little words can mean so much. I think the mom was a very passionate, motivating and inspiring mom. The poem shows she kept going in life, she didn't sit down on the stairs. When she said that, I think she meant don't stop the climb, don't rest, the top of your journey awaits you, greatness awaits. This poem really inspires me and a lot of others.

I think Langston Hughes is trying to say is life won't always go the way you want it to go. When he said "It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor" I think hes trying to say life has obstacles in life and you need to complete.

I think this whole poem is about how life won't always be in your favor. Life is not always fair and you met have to overcome something that your scared to get through it. He also met be talking about how life is unstable and you met have to do something you don't like to make it stable.

The world will always have obstacles that everyone will have to face. The obstacles met be long or met be short but however long it is you have to complete it. It's kind of like baseball to move to the next base you have to do something. If you complete a obstacle you move on to next and you do that till you completed the task.

Sometime when your alive you have to do something that you met hate or that you think is hard. But in the end you met think that it was worth it to do the task. Because sometimes that met be somebodies life you saved by doing that task.

I want to be a Fire Fighter when I grow up. Fire Fighters' have life threatening task that person is depending on you to save his life.

I think that Langston Hughes is trying to say that life is hard. There is no reason to stop believing in what you think is right or wrong.

I also think that Langston Hughes is trying to say there is no time to relax. There is time to go find things and be curious and you had nothing that was that good in life.

I think that the poem is about the person being like brave and curious to find out what is in the world. I also think the part where it says "And reachin' landin's" is telling about how that person is curious about the world and how they feel about it.

I think that the poem shows a lot of detail about the that person shows how this person likes to explore and be curious also it shows how they feel about the world and how they love the world.

I think she was telling him not to be lazy, I'm not kidding. She is telling him that you have to work hard in life. When I read the part:,Don't you set down on the steps
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.It reminds me of slacking off. Slacking off reminds me of me, yes its not a good thing to, slack off but some times you have to sit down on the steps for a few minutes and relax in life because that very next day it could all be over. So work hard but enjoy life at the same. You only have one life and its a very short life use it well.

I think Langston Hughes is capering life to a set of stairs with tacks, splinters, and torn up boards as problems in life. Where it said "sometimes goin'in the dark" as when your friends leave you and no one is there to help you. where it said "don't you sit down on the steps" I think he is saying don't give up.I think it is a wonderful poem.
