Why does Reading Matter?

As we begin a new year in Reading Workshop, the question for this weekend is, "why is reading important?" This is weekend homework for students and their parents. Students must discuss this with either a parent, grandparent, aunt, or uncle.

I think most people know that reading controls many things we do in life. My hope is that we can have some discussion about how reading impacts our lives as adults, and how it can lead to success for students.

Students can either write out a short overview of their conversation, or post it as a comment.

For me, reading is entertainment.
Since I have cancer and can't do physical activity I read. It makes the day go by faster.

I read manuals to run my programs for the computer graphics. So we can come up with cool designs for shirts and signs.

After talking about why reading is impotant with my parents. We came up with, the more you read the more you learn. And how reading helps improve your brain.

Desire,

You win the prize for the first poster on this topic.

By reading yours, your grandmother's and your mother's comments, I can see a family that values reading and education.

Personally, I have to admit though, I like your grandma's reason the best. Read for the fun of it! :)

I talked to my mom and dad about why they think reading is important. They both agreed that the more you read the more educated you will be. Also the more you know (by reading) the more you can accomplish in life, and it's better to be an interesting person than a boring one.

Reading is important for many reasons. Some of these reasons are very practical, while others less tangible, and not so obvious. When we teach our children to read at an early age and to improve their reading we are preparing them to be productive adults in the future.

Reading leads to success. Period. Not only do we need to learn how to read to survive in this hi-tech world, but we also should tease our brain with all kinds of different information about it. And that is fun. If you can find that "in between" feeling about reading (educational and fun) you will definitely succeed.

it's better to be an interesting person than a boring one. Good point Christian. I would also say it is better to be an interested person, than a bored one.

I feel that reading books is something that kids don't do. They watch to much T.V and play video games.Peyton is not a game player even though she has alot of gadgets. She does spend hours on the internet ever day.I would say that this would be the internet generation way of reading.

Peyton,

So often, when someone doesn't really like to read, they just need to find the right book. You will have to talk to me the next time you get ready to start a book, and we will see if we can find something you will really enjoy.

I talked to my dad about why reading is important. He thought it was important to learn how to read so you can go to a good college. Also you should read to learn.

Ben S. said... Reading is important because you want to be a well informed person. The more you read the more knowledge you will gain.

Tyler,

I think it is interesting to see your viewpoint, and that of your dad's. You can see how reading is fun, especially when you read one of your magazines. Your dad can see how it will help you be more successful down the road.

Thanks to both of you for sharing.

Take a look at the post, Is Surfing the Net Reading?. Do you look at websites that focus on archery and bow hunting?

hmmmm

Lily's dad said, learn how to read so you can go to a good college. Also you should read to learn.

This sounds like the point that Crystal and Olga made. I think I can expect a lot of hard workers this year, based on the expectations of parents.

Lily, thanks for sharing your dad's thoughts. What about yours?

My mom and I talked about how reading is important if you want to go to college. When you go to college you can get a better job. Reading is also important when using a cookbook so your food tastes good.

I think that reading is especially important in children because it strengthens their vocabulary and, also, let's them get imaginative with their word choices. Reading also plays a major role when they reach adulthood. It is important to be able to speak and communicate well to be successful and, this is gained by getting the kids interested in reading at an early age.

I, myself enjoy reading in the evenings after the kids are in bed. I think that it is relaxing. My favorite author is Mary Higgins-Clark and right now I am reading "I Heard That Song Before".

I think reading is important because it helps you learn words that you don't know. It also helps you read harder words as you get bigger books. Reading can also make you smarter and, it can make you learn more than you think it can. My favorite thing about reading is when the teacher reads to the classroom.

Reading is important because you can learn a lot more. It can also help you in the future when you get older. Also reading is so impotant that whenever you don't want to read you have to because it helps your brain.

I think reading matters because many people do not know how to read and we are all lucky to be able to read. Also many grown-up can not read and you can get to learn a lot when you read. You can learn new words and what those words mean.

I think reading is important because
it helps in every subject. It is something to pace the time with to and reading helps me relax when I want to go to sleep. It also takes you into a different world and it helps with your reading grade too. Sometimes I don't like to read and sometimes I do.

The reason my mom thinks reading is important is because every book you read you learn something new. Another reason reading is important is because it takes you on an adventure. That is what one of my friends said.

I think reading matters because you can lean things by reading. I like to read because when you read you it can take you on adventure in the book. I think the more you read the more you lean.

I think reading on the web is the same because you still get same information from a book. And sometimes it is not the same as a book because you mite get more titles on the internet.

Reading is important because if you wanted you keep up the dates in the newspaper to see when the next up date is. Reading is important because it would be easier to read. I think reading is important because rules and signs would be a lot easier to read. Reading is important because say you just watched a movie and then the book just came out once you read it has more detail.

The reason my mom thinks reading is important is because it expands you vocabulary and imaginations. Also if your really upset all you have to do is open a book and explore a new world. The reason I think readings important is because I enjoy having a place to escape from my house just for fun!! It also makes your brain smarter and stronger. mom and I love reading a lot!!

For all the kids who are still non-believers in reading picture this. Imagine not being able to read the lable on the medication your child needs to get well. Imagine not being able to read your child a story at bedtime. I hope you can't imagine this and it seems unbelievable to you but the truth is there are people out there who struggle to get by day to day because they can't read. I hope you will all make the extra effort to find something that interests you and dive into it because your future depends on it.

I think reading definitely expands a child horizon and IQ. It really helps to open up the world to them in so many ways.

I love what "anonymous" said about how reading can take you on an adventure. I love reading, have always loved reading, and will always love reading. Through reading, I can say I have been on many adventures around the world, although I have never crossed an ocean! I have also "met" many interesting people through the characters that I have met in those books and have explored many different time periods of our history.

I also can't count the number of times I have said "Oh, I learned that in a book I read once". I do read for enjoyment, but I love that I learn SOMETHING from EVERYTHING that I have ever read.

Sandra, I love your comment about what you would miss out if you couldn't read. I agree whole-heartedly with everything you said. I am so glad that I had the ability to sit my girls on my lap and read to them! What a treasured experience.

I enjoyed READING all of the comments on the blog. Students, parents, and Mr. McGuire, keep up the great work!

Mr. McGuire said...

I sure agree with you Mrs. Caudill. The comments from students and parents are really quite amazing.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment. And, I know parents are really busy too. I am thankful that so many parents took time to share their insights into the value of reading.

Reading is important because it helps you to have a better imagination It also helps you to understand more things like grammar and stuff like that. Reading helps you get more influenced. It also is fun if you get the right book. It will also help in spelling and all through life. That is why I think reading is important.

My mom and I discussed reading is important because it takes you on adventures, you can learn things from it. The news paper keeps you up on current events. Also you can learn past history, and you can discover something you never thought was true, but then theres books like Ripleys Believe it or not where theres record breaking.

For me, reading as a child was not especially fun all the time. But as I have gotten older, the more important reading has become. I really enjoy reading about Earth and Space and I pass alone the importace of reading to Jessika every single day. She has learned many new things just by reading and I know she will excel because of this.

Reading matters because if we couldn't read things would go haywire. If we couldn't read road sines we would have more wrecks. So reading does matter.

My mom says that reading is important. Reading is important because if you can read you can do anything. You will get good grades. Also you can get a college degree. Lastly you can get a good job all because you can read.

1.)Reading over the internet is the same as reading a book but you have to worry about power serges all the time or you don't have the internet yet.

2.)Reading a magazine and reading a book is the same but only a magazine has more pictures and less words than a book has.

3.) I think reading a book has more valuable skills than reading nonfiction over the internet any time.

I think Sandra r. is right. I would feel really bad if I couldn't read a bed time story to my kid when I grow up. So that inspires me to read more every day.

Anonymous said...

I do not think that it is because we can read nonfiction books from the library or from your class.
