Get the Picture? Freak the Mighty Does

When you are reading, do you get the picture? If not, why are you reading, or as Chris Tovani says, fake reading? A conversation with a student yesterday in Reading Workshop caused me to think about the point of reading.

Then, as I watched Kevin tutor Max while reading King Arthur in Freak the Mighty a connection shouted out.

As Kevin says, "every word is part of a picture. Every sentence is a picture. All you do is let your imagination connect them together." These interconnected pictures then become the movie that plays in your mind as you read a book. This is the basis of comprehension.

The student I talked to yesterday has spent her whole life fake reading. She chooses books she can't read, or that are so difficult for her that there are no pictures when she reads.

Why? She can read any book she wants. All last year she could choose her own SSR book. Yet she continues to choose books that she doesn't "get." Hopefully someday she will realize that she has a movie ticket, and just needs to turn on the show.

When you read Freak The Mighty I could imagine everything the way you explained it. When you said that Max was tied up in a chair next to a window I could imagine what it looked like in the movie. I hope that when people read their book they picture it,(It makes more sense) trust me. People who don't read are missing out on many things that they could learn and visualise in their mind.Like you said it is like a movie theater.

I always think of what the character looks like and picture them in my mind and see if that is what they look like sometimes I guess right. In Freak The Mighty I thought freak was shorter and sounded like an alien but I guess Mr.McGuire just likes to talk like that just kidding.

Freak the Mighty was a good book. When you read the book I could imagine Freak being a shorty and a funny little guy. I also didn't think that his back would be like that. I really forgot to include that he was crippled when I imagined it.

I imagined Max being skinny mini. I imagined his voice the way Mr. McGuire made his voice. Why I imagined Max being a skinny mini is because of the way Mr. McGuire made it sound like.

Mr. Mr.McGuire could be a actor with his voice because it sounds funny. He could make hilarious movies.

I think about the book for a minute or two and then I start reading. I picture myself as the main character as the book goes on. I feel like I'm in their shoes.

I think the book is better than the move but that is my opinion some people think other wise. The book had more detail than the move, it was ok but the people did not look like what I thought they would.

If you fake read I think that you are just wasting you're time just siting there and doing nothing when you could find something better to do with you're time. Also if you fake read all the time I also think that you will regret it when you get older because you would not read that well just because you fake read.

Dear Mr.McGuire

I think fake reading is a waste of time Who ever does that is missing out on some great books. I do imagine what the characters in my book look like. Yet there is a movie (twilight) and I did not imagine that Bella would look like that. When something big happens I always imagine what they look like. When bella jumped off of the cliff in the book New Moon. I imagine that her hair was in the air.I love reading so much if I have a good book.

I think that fake reading is great for a lot of kids who don't read very well. I think some people just want to read a book and get it over with and go on and read the other books but I read books and try to picture what is going on in the book.

Freak the mighty was a great book I thought the movie was lacking details. The movie did not say all the things the book did. The part in the movie when Kevin said every word is a part of a picture every sentence is a picture I think that is the best way I have ever herd it said. Kevin says so you can get what he is saying because he says it so clearly that I get it just fine. So the next time I read a book I will think of that saying every word is a part of a picture every sentence is a picture.

I think if you fake read you don't even need to look at a book. If you choose not to read don't even start trying because it will not work you will do it over and over again. Once you start fake reading you can not stop I bet you. If you try you might get there but odds are you will not. How could you fake read you might have a good book in your hands but you will never read it. I could not see somebody saying they finished a book and they did not even start it so think about that and see what you are missing out on.

I agree it is a good book and I truly believe what freak said every word is part of a picture every sentence is a picture. And some people should think about that every time before they read.

Dear Mr. McGuire,
I think that if you fake reading you are missing out. There are a lot of great books out there and if you fake read whats the point of sitting their with a book for how ever long. I couldn't fake read, I would have to start reading after a while. Like last night I was sitting on my couch waiting for seven o'clock because thats when I start reading, well I started a little early because books open so many new and exciting doors. For the person that is fake reading you should start reading books that are for you, authors don't just sit around writing hoping that someone will read their books, they write to interest kids and adults. So if you are the one who fake reading, stop theirs no scene in it, unless you like not getting books, then we have a problem! Anyway I hope you take my advice.

I do not like to read. I think that reading is a waste of time. I can't get the picture in my head when I read. I always think to my self imagine this...it doesn't happen. When I read a book then watch the movie the book always ends up making better sense to me. Even if I have a math problem with words in it, I wont get it I have to have it read to me. I can read really well, I just don't understand what I read. I will completely forget everything I read. I always in end up reading a study sheet like a thousand times.

Freak the Mighty is a good book and movie I liked them both some people think other wise.Fake reading is a big wast of time.People that fake read I feel sorry for because they missed out on a lot of good books. When I was in second grade I used to fake read till I found a really good book. From then on I never faked read again. Finally I read the whole sires then I went to next, Don't spend your whole life fake reading find the right book for you.

I think that the students who fake read are just hurting themselves. Why they fake read is a mystery to everyone. I think students fake read because they cannot find a book that they think is worth them reading. If students fake read usually you can find it out. Usually you can because their minutes go down to exactly 180 or their minutes are so high that it is not believable.

What you read is a better movie, than what you see. If you read, you can imagine what you think they should look like. For example, when our class was watching 'Freak the Mighty', someone in my class said that no one looked like what they thought the characters should look like, especially Max and Kevin. This may not be rue for every body, but when someone reads out loud, I remember more and even get a better picture than when I read to myself! The weird thing is, even though I read out loud to myself, it doesn't mean I remember it all!

I think that the reader you talked to should read the back of the books to see if she likes them so she can read and get the mental picture in her mind to better understand what she is reading. So she can also enjoy reading more than she has before when she was just reading to fake read.

Freak the Mighty was a book that My L.A. teacher read to the sixth grade. The book was really good. There was a part in the book that said every word is part of a picture and every sentence is a picture. I think that has a good point. It is telling you that every book you read there should be a move going through your head. I always have that move going on in my head. That is the reason I read because when you are reading you can picture everything how you want it to be. A book is not like a move were you just see everything how they picture it you see it how you want to.

I think that the kid Mr. McGuire talked to should really take time sit down and just read the book so the she/he knows if they like the book. When I am reading I have a move going on in my head in then when I am done reading the book I keep wanting to see that move again. I think that is why I like to read because if you like the book and you see the move in your head you just want to keep on reading. If you are one of those people that just sit there and not even really read then you are missing out on what could be the best move you have ever seen.

If you are fake reading you don't like to read. Also if you fake read you don't understand reading and it makes you not want to read at all. And the higher the book level you are suppose to read makes it a lot harder to read a higher book level which makes you not want to read a book at all.

Kevin is right. Every word is part of a picture. Every sentence is a picture. It is like a movie playing through your head a you read a word. If you say the word snow I see a snowman with red gloves and a green scarf, blizzards and much more. That is when your imagination connects them together. Just with one word I thought of many things, with a whole sentence I could think of the scenery, the snow covered hills, and even in my Star Wars book I can see the clashing lightsabers, I can even hear the lightsabers clashing! When I first heard Kevin say that in the movie I had know clue what that meant until you said it slow and now I get exactly what it means.

If you are going to read at least don't fake read. If you fake read then stop because you are just sitting there doing nothing. When you fake read you are missing out on really good books. You are not fooling no one but your self. If you fake read sooner or later you are going to get caught. If you try to read books higher than the book level you are supposed to be on it is harder to read. Then this causes you to fake read.

Reading is a big part of your life and when you fake read you not learning anything new. Yea some books are harder to read than other books but that does not mean you have to fake read to read them. Just get a new book that is easier to read. Reading can get you into big jobs that pay a lot of money but when you fake read you will never get a job that pays good money. Fake reading is the worst thing you can do to a book. Books are supposed to be read not just flipped though or maybe not even touched. I am sure Max faked reading until he meet Freak or Kevin. Kevin taught Max how to read. Now Max likes reading.
